The content on Dog Mental Health is for general educational purposes only.
It is not veterinary advice. It cannot account for your dog’s age, breed, medical history, current medications, weight, or present condition. Nothing on this site should replace an examination by a licensed veterinarian, delay an appointment, or be used to diagnose or treat your dog.
What We Are
We are writers who have spent years living with dogs and who work carefully from veterinary sources — including the Merck Veterinary Manual and guidance from the American Veterinary Medical Association.
We are not veterinarians. Nothing published here should be read as a professional veterinary opinion about your specific animal.
Emergency Situations
If your dog is having difficulty breathing, has collapsed, is seizing, has severe bleeding, or is unable to urinate, contact an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Do not wait, and do not use any website — including this one — to decide whether a situation is serious enough.
When a Symptom Needs a Vet
Seek veterinary care rather than relying on online guidance if your dog shows:
- Sudden changes in appetite, breathing, or behavior
- Any symptom that appears quickly and worsens
- Signs of pain, especially when touched
- Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
- Anything that worries you, even if you cannot name why
We try to be clear about thresholds in our articles — where “watch it” ends and “call your vet” begins — but that judgment ultimately belongs to you and your vet.
Emergencies and Poisoning
For suspected poisoning, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control service immediately. Do not attempt to induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional instructs you to.
Accuracy and Updates
We work to keep our content accurate and current, and we correct articles when we find errors. Veterinary guidance does change, though. Information published on this site should not be treated as permanently valid — when it matters most, confirm it with a veterinary professional.
Editorial Corrections
If you find an error in an article, please contact us with the article URL and a description of the problem. We review every correction request.
